Here's a little something you might never have thought of:
Just how DID the incarnation occur? I mean, was it a bright light that shone on Mary? Was she conscious? Did she fly up to heaven, or was she alone in the dark? We may never know this side of eternity, but here's an interesting possibility to consider.
The Bible says that the Most High would "overshadow" her. But what does that mean? An English concordance reveals that word is associated with both the Ark of the Covenant as well as the Glory Cloud. You remember the Glory Cloud don't you? Also called the Shekinah, it's the cloud of God's presence that dwelt in the Garden of Eden, sat atop Mt. Sinai when Moses got the 10 Commandments, led the Israelites through the desert, and rested over the Tabernacle. The Greek word used there in Lk. 1:35 is also used of the cloud atop the Mount of Transfiguration when God's glory was manifest before the disciples.
Could it be that glory cloud that came down upon Mary, enveloping her with God's presence to conceive our infant Savior? If so, like the ancient Ark of the Covenant (which housed the 10 commandments, Aaron's rod, and the Manna) Mary carried our Living Word, Bread of Life, and Great High Priest within her.
Something to think about this Christmas...
